My struggles with my weight started early in life. I was always a bit heavier than all of the other people my age. While I was very active as a child in dance, volleyball, and swimming, I was not thin, nor did I look like any of the other girls my age. My parents said it was my genes, that I was simply just built like my grandpa, and that there wasn’t much I could do about it. I accepted it as something I couldn’t help for many years, even though I was very active but always desired to be smaller. And then, the summer before my senior year of high school, the first of several very hard life events happened; my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and ultimately lost his battle just six weeks after diagnosis. While that first year after his passing was so difficult for so many reasons, one of the worst parts was my struggle with mental health. Although I changed nothing about my activity, my eating habits, or my workouts, I gained almost 50 pounds that year. I was miserable in more ways than I could count.
After carrying around the extra weight for several years, I decided that I had had enough, and it was time for me to take back control of my health. I worked hard with a trainer and watched every single calorie I consumed for a few years. I was able to lose almost all of the excess weight I had gained during that time and keep it off for a few years until another major life struggle happened, and I gained it all back within a year. Several huge life events happened over the next few years, and I stayed heavy. It wasn’t until I had been in Seattle for a year, traveling about 75% of my time for work, that I gained an additional 40–50 pounds. Around December 2019, I could only think about how miserable I felt and jumped in head first to change that. My coworker recommended a trainer that he had been using, and I gave him a call. My trainer incorporated mindfulness techniques and spirituality into my fitness journey, which I had never even considered before. I learned that health and fitness aren’t just physical; I didn’t gain weight because I wasn’t being active or eating correctly; I gained weight because my mindset changed, and I became depressed. Ultimately, after taking a holistic approach to wellness, I ended up losing all but about 10 pounds of the weight I had gained.
I held steady within about five pounds of my lowest weight for about three years before another change in my life caused a shift, and I ended up stumbling across Macro coaching. I had a consultation with a coach and told him that I wasn’t trying to lose weight, but that I wanted to tone up a bit more. He helped me build a workout and food plan that worked for me, and I started my Macro journey. Within the first three months, I had lost an additional 15 pounds. Even better than that, though, I was in the best shape of my life. I loved workouts, I was proud of my body for the first time ever, and I had the healthiest mindset about life that I can ever recall having. Now, I am happy and healthy. I am so strong in every way (mentally, physically, and emotionally), and I obtained my Macros certification, so I can help you become the best version of yourself as well!
